How a heat pump fails differently

A heat pump shares most of its parts with an AC — compressor, fan motors, capacitors, coils — so it can fail the same ways, especially in cooling season. But it adds a reversing valve that switches between heating and cooling, a defrost cycle for the occasional cold snap, and auxiliary heat strips that back up the heat pump when demand outruns it.

That creates failure patterns an AC-only mindset misses: a heat pump that cools fine but blows cool air in heating mode, a system running on expensive aux heat when the reversing valve or refrigerant charge is actually the problem, or a unit stuck in defrost on a mild day. These need a technician who checks mode logic, not just pressures.

Common symptoms we see

In cooling season, treat it like any AC: warm air, icing, noise, and short cycling all apply. In heating season, the complaints are usually lukewarm supply air (which is partly normal — heat pump air feels cooler than furnace air, and that surprises people), a unit running constantly on cold mornings, aux heat that never shuts off, or outdoor coils icing solid and never defrosting.

Some of that is behavior, not failure — and part of our job is telling you which is which. A heat pump that runs longer and blows cooler air than a furnace is doing its job; one running aux heat all afternoon in 60-degree weather is not, and it's costing you on every bill.
