Before you call, there are three things worth checking yourself. One: the filter — if it's gray and choked, swap it and give the system an hour. Two: the thermostat — confirm it's set to cool, not just fan, and try fresh batteries if the display is dim or blank. Three: the breaker — if the AC circuit is tripped, you can reset it once, but if it trips again, stop; a repeated trip is an electrical fault that needs a technician, not another reset.

If those don't resolve it, stop there. Capacitors, contactors, and refrigerant are not DIY territory, and poking around an outdoor unit can turn a repair into an injury.

Symptoms and what they usually mean

Warm air with the system running most often points to a refrigerant problem, a failed compressor or capacitor, or a thermostat calling for fan only. Weak airflow through the vents suggests a filter, blower, or duct problem. Ice on the copper lines means restricted airflow or low refrigerant — shut it down and let it thaw. Water around the indoor unit almost always means a blocked condensate drain. A clicking outdoor unit that won't start is typically a capacitor or contactor.

Short cycling — starting and stopping every few minutes — has causes ranging from a dying compressor to a filthy filter to an oversized system. Smells matter too: a musty odor usually means drain or coil problems, while burning or electrical smells mean shut it off and call us.
