What a tune-up covers

A proper maintenance visit is a working inspection, not a glance. We clean the outdoor coil, check refrigerant pressures against the manufacturer's spec, measure electrical draw on motors and the compressor, test capacitors before they fail, clear and flush the condensate drain, check the blower and filter, verify airflow and temperature split, and look over duct connections and the drain pan.

Each of those checks exists because it catches a known failure pattern: the capacitor that's 10% out of spec today is the no-cool call in August; the drain that's starting to slow is the ceiling stain next month.

Between visits: the filter habit

The single most valuable thing you can do yourself is change the filter on schedule — every 1–3 months depending on filter type, pets, and how hard the system runs. A choked filter makes the blower strain, cuts cooling, ices coils, and quietly inflates your FPL bill. If you can't remember the last time it was changed, that's the first thing to check before calling for service.
